History
Oniipa Guesthouse is located in Oniipa, a town steeped in missionary heritage and cultural significance. Established in 1872 by the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission, Oniipa became a beacon of faith and development. The town is named after the African Ebony tree, once used as a tannery, symbolizing strength and resilience.
Nearby stands the iconic Onandjokwe Lutheran Hospital, founded in 1911 by Finnish doctor Selma Rainio (Gwanandjokwe)—Namibia’s first hospital and a cornerstone of medical history. Oniipa remains a vibrant destination for cultural tourism, offering museums, homesteads, and missionary trails that echo its legacy.
